Maths - Patterning

Patterning in Shape

We collaboratively created shape patterns. Later we attempted to recreate them using the computer.
Pattern is a very important aspect of understanding in all subjects.

< i > and < y > rules

The <i/y> Relationship

The letter <i and <y> have a "jobsharing" relationship in English.
We  investigated the patterns we could find. Did you know that you avoid leaving a <y> in the middle of a word unless you have a good reason to do so? There are only three good reasons and so far we have found two.

Here are some words that might help you guess. Which ones do you leave the <y> in and which ones don't?

fry + ing,  try + ed, happy+ est, try +ing, dry +ed

We played the trading game to develop our familiarity with the vocab.

Identifying the change needed.

Students' Questions

Inquiry Questions

Recording the question
In each Unit of Inquiry students are encouraged to think of and record their own inquiry question that is particularly important to them. This can help guide the unit as it progresses.

We can learn from each other's work.

Totally focused on our work.

Word Family

What is a Word Family?

All words belong in families related by meaning. It is when we add suffixes and prefixes that we add to and change their meaning. They will still however retain their original meaning within the base.
Brainstorming words that belong in families

Recording words
Waiting your turn demonstrates the PYP Attitudes of respect and tolerance.
Enthusiasm and cooperation are part of the PYP Attitudes that we all want to develop.

The Enormous Turnip

Collaboration was essential in constructing the turnip from reused materials.
As you know we recently shared a simple dramatisation of the story: The Enormous Turnip. We all enjoyed being able to share this with you at assembly. Over the course of our Unit of Inquiry it has been fascinating to see how stories we have been able to find that have similar patterns. We are really keen to see if there are any in your own culture that are like this.

We painted the leaves from reused newspaper

By working together we are all forced to be caring, open minded communicators. All three are aspects of the PYP Learner profile.
