Fabric Stiching

Time for some sewing of our own - using coloued thread we all learnt 3 different types of stitches and created a small piece of  art.

Concentration was required

Garment Factory

Our trip to the garment factory - thanks to Janvi and Pramiti's dad, enabled us to see how fabric is changed and used to form a range of garments.

We started in the warehouse where the large bolts of fabric is delivered and checked for marks and flaws.

Each garment has a clipboard created that show what is required for it to be made. It has a sample of the fabric, cotton, buttons, zips lining and even the stuffing. What ever is used - including the labels are all placed onto the clipboard so there are no errors in the garments construction.

Next we went to the pattern design area where designers plan and cut the patterns that will be used to cut the fabric into the pieces need to make the item ordered.
The pattern is then taken to the cutting room. The pattern is laid out onto a large stack of fabric and place into a set design to maximize the fabric used. It is then cut with a special cutter that is able to cut through multiple layers at on time.

The manufacturing line where each sewer sews part of the garment. Each piece is passed along the line until the garment is completely finished, checked and then packed for shipping.

The finished garments are checked for quality - stray pieces of cotton is cut away, marks are removed and  garment is ready to be wrapped and packed for shipping.

The sample room. Each garment that this company makes is kept here for reference.
An amazing place to visit.

Cardboard Loom

Using a cardboard loom, we were able to weave simple mats. We learnt that this technique is used to make most fabrics.

Paper Weaving

Learning the basics - weaving involves creating a weft and a warp. Threading weft in and out of the warp.

Unit 3 - How The World Works

Transdisciplinary Theme :

How The World Works

Central Idea :

We design and create  using different materials for different purposes.

Lines on Inquiry :

- Properties of material
- Use of Materials
- Manipulation of material for a specific purposes

Exploring 3D Shapes

What types of shapes are 2 dimensional?

Creating shape art - designing vehicles using 2 D shapes

Forces and Motion

Force and Motion  being explored through the world of Lego and construction shapes.

Creating a fair test to help us find car designs that travel the furthest.

Our race - which partnership was able to create a vehicle that moved the further than the others?

Some of our designs

Ava and Kaitlin's vehicle

Yunchae and Nasya based their design on the aeroplane.

The boys thought that more wheels would make it faster.

Janvi and Pramiti also used a wing in their design.

Egg Experiment

Egg Drop Challenge
Using the information we have learnt about air pressure, air resistance, we were challenge to create a container that, when dropped from the stairs prevented an egg from breaking.

Congratulations girls - your egg made it safely

Mmmmm the same can not be said for Kyle and Zo's egg.

Remy's construction was not able to be tested at all as it experienced some construction malfunctions.

Transportation Poster

Putting together everything that we have learnt together for our posters.

Reviewing our information and thinking about what should be included and where.

Thinking about presentation - what layout looks better?
Sharing information

Buoyancy-Rocket

Force and Motion
Using air pressure to propel paper rockets.

Transportation Museum

Our trip to the transportation museum allowed us to explore transportation from the past. What an exciting place to visit,
Trains from all ages - big and small were climbed over and played in.

A glimpse of transport used in Jakarta a long time ago.

More fun, riding in and driving miniature becak.
