Word Families - Word Web

Understanding that words belong in families, connected by MEANING and SPELLING helps us to understand more deeply why words are spelled the way they are.
English words have a base and it is the base that holds the MEANING and the key to the SPELLING.
Prefixes and suffixes are added to the base to create other words that are related.

By investigating the word <force> we discovered that the letter <c> can also represent
the phoneme /s/.

We worked with a partner to construct the word families for
<push> <pull> <move> <twist> and <turn>.
We had a package of words and together we had to decided which words belonged to the word family and which words didn't. We are thinking about meaning and spelling as we place the words on the word web.

We noticed some interesting aspects about the words we placed on the word web.
We noticed <moving> didn't have the single, silent <e> but <movement> did...mmm! Another investigation for us to look into.

Each time we write a new word on the word web we are spelling the base. That means we learn the spelling of the base very well!
We will continue to add to these word webs as we discover new words.

If we are unsure if a word belongs to the family we placed a question mark after the word. We are learning to be risk takers, to question and hypothesis. Mistakes are an important part of our learning!
Mrs Lyn showed us how to use the Word Searcher to help us find more words to add to the word webs. We were surprised at how many more words we found!
