Car Model

Model Cars
When we go on a journey we often use vehicles to get around. We found out about wheels and axles and then designed and built our model vehicles. We used them for some science experiments by seeing whjat might happen if we added some weights. We trialled the cars and recorded the measurements. We then worked out the average distance travelled.
Beginning the design on paper.

More designing.

The construction stage needs good measuring skills and hand-eye coordination.

Concentration is vital.

We use cardboard tabs to provide strength.

Our newest class member.

Careful as we go.

Gluing.

A helping hand.

We reviewed the problems we were having getting the wheels to turn properly.

Comparing results.

Close up of wheels and axles.

Appraising our progress.

Covering ready for painting.

Putting  the paint design on the finished models.

Concentration is vital.
Painting carefully.

Almost done.

Planning our science experiment on how to set up the ramp.

Measuring how far the cars rolled.

Working together to achieve our goal.

The ramp.

Testing what happens if we add weights.

Would you like a drive?

Heavyweight contender about to come unstuck!

A proud driver.

A limo of the best design.

A compact vehicle.

London buses have nothing on this one!

Sleek and streamlined.

Inspired by the Batmobile?

A tough 4 wheeler.
Designs of our vehicles before building.

Good designs include a list of materials.

Different views help others understand the plans.

Trip To Kebun Raya

We took a trip to Kebun Raya near the beginning of our unit on "Journeys" We drew maps of the gardens and used them in our tourist brochures.

The trip to Kebun Raya was fun because we were at the cactus gardens and the zoology museum. I really liked the Blue whale skeleton.

When we were looking at the map we looking where all the places were to go.

The Kebun Raya map.

We are looking at the names of the trees. Many are named after people who found the trees or who did something famous.

When we were observing the tree we saw how old it was by looking at the rings.

These two children are looking at the map near the aquatic plants.

It's an interesting fruit.

This is a big frog hiding under the lilypad.

Measuring Length

We used some of the fine weather to go outside and practise our measuring and estimating skills.
Mr Jim is showing that this is the length of a metre.

Mr Jim is showing how the  trundle wheel turns around to measure one metre.

We are measuring from the red stairs to the white stairs.

We are measuring outside the class. We used paper and pencil and we recorded our measurements on the paper.

I am recording my estimate and then actually measure the distance to find the answer.

Doubling and Halving

Doubling and halving is a very efficient method for multiplying. We started by doubling 5 and then halving the other number. So if you have a problem like 5 x 12 it can become 10 x 6 which is much easier to work out in your head. We have some students who can work out a problem like 246 x 5!
Drawing an array of rows of ten.

More arrays

Drawing circles in the arrays; we are cooperating.

These are the different arrays.

Mrs Lyn was showing the arrays to the students.

The students are watching and learning.

Trip To Army Museum - Museum PETA

Our trip was not really to visit the museum but to use it as a way to build up a better understanding of the neighbourhood. We have also used this as a location to develop a better understanding of how to give good directions. As a side benefit we learnt a little about Indonesian history.

Heading down into Sempur.

Crossing the bridge.

Up to Jl Sudirman
